Elite Group B Day 4

Punjab‘s Shubman Gill played stupendous knock as he nearly pulled off a record chase of 338 runs before Hyderabad bowlers pulled things back in a see-saw affair that culminated into an edge-of-the-seat thrilling draw. Gill stroked his way to 148 off 154 as the visitors were cruising along nicely in the hunt before Mohammed Siraj picked three quick wickets to swing the pendulum in his team’s favour in their Ranji Trophy, Elite Group B clash.

From a comfortable 278/3, Punjab wobbled to 294/6. The slide began when Siraj broke the 101-run stand between captain Mandeep Singh (41) and Gill that gave Hyderabad a mighty scare. Gill followed Mandeep back to the dressing room soon with Siraj landing the big blow in his next over.

Gill struck 16 fours and two sixes during his assault. With the chase slipping out of control, Manpreet Gony struck a four and two sixes to the hopes of his team alive. However, Siraj dismissed him on 23 and then had his team dreaming of a win when he collected his fourth scalp in Mayank Markande.

With just two wickets remaining, Sanvir Singh (13 not out) and Arpit Panu saw through the testing phase, with the match going into the last ball of the day before a draw was confirmed. Punjab finished at 324/8.

Earlier, Hyderabad had declared their second innings on 323/3 thanks to an unbeaten 161 from captain Akshath Reddy.

Hyderabad took three points based on their first innings lead.

Brief Scores: Hyderabad 317 and 323/3d drew with Punjab 303 and 324/8 (Shubman Gill 148, Mandeep Singh 41; Mohammed Siraj 4/71)
