Mumbai, the most successful team in Ranji Trophy history with 41 championships, has qualified for the 2023-24 season’s finals. The Ajinkya Rahane-led team defeated Tamil Nadu by an innings and 70 runs in the second semi-final at the Bandra Kurla Complex.
Mumbai will make their 47th Ranji Trophy final appearance, cementing their dominance in India’s biggest domestic championship.
Tamil Nadu opted to bat first and were swept out for 146 in their first innings. Aside from Vijay Shankar’s 44 and Washington Sundar’s 43, no other batter could match Mumbai’s disciplined bowling assault, led by Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande, who claimed two and three wickets, respectively.

In response, Mumbai heaped on the agony for Tamil Nadu, scoring 378 in the first innings to build a commanding 232-run advantage. Despite early disappointments, like as the departures of Prithvi Shaw and Bhupen Lalwani, Musheer Khan (55) and Hardik Tamore (35) provided key contributions to the team.
However, Shardul Thakur’s sparkling century propelled Mumbai to a superior position, earning him Player of the Match honours. Tanush Kotian’s tough unbeaten 89 powered Mumbai to a dominant total of 378 runs, giving them a comfortable advantage. Sai Kishore, the skipper of Tamil Nadu, claimed six wickets.
Tamil Nadu’s second innings followed a similar pattern, as they were bowled out for 162, falling far short of Mumbai’s impressive total. This time, the spin combo of Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian took the most wickets, sharing six. Only Baba Indrajith’s defiant 70 offered some opposition to Tamil Nadu.
With this decisive win, Mumbai advanced to their 47th Ranji Trophy final. They will face the winners of the other semi-final between Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh, looking to add to their impressive total of 41 championships.
