Ravichandran Ashwin completed his second Test hundred against West Indies on Day Three of the first Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Both his centuries have come while batting at No 8. Ashwin scored a boundary in the second over of the day off Tino Best to get going. He got to his hundred with push through the cover and completed a single.

Overall 10 players including Ashwin have scored a century at No 8 for India. However, Ashwin is now only the fourth cricketer who has two centuries to his name at that position. MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Kapil Dev are the others to have recorded this feat. He is also the second Indian batsman to score successive Test hundred at that position against the same opposition with Harbhajan achieving the same against New Zealand.

Ashwin has had a good record against West Indies as both his tons have come against the same opposition. In the last series against West Indies in 2011, Ashwin scored a century at Wankhede Stadium. The off-spinner has a special liking for Kolkata as he now averages more than 200 at Eden Gardens. In December 2012, he scored an unbeaten 91 against England.

Ashwin walked in when India were 153 for six. He turned to be an able ally for Rohit Sharma as the duo consolidated India’s stand. Just in his 17th, Ashwin has shown great maturity timing the ball with perfection and having ample time to play his shots. As of now he averages over 40 in Test cricket.
