Ravichandran Ashwin is amongst the finest bowlers. He can bat, he is articulate and analyses the game well too. Ashwin, who was in the UAE to launch a cricket academy at a school, remarked that Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath is amongst his role models. Herath, earlier this month, spun Sri Lanka to one of its most famous win at Abu Dhabi against Pakistan. Ashwin watched the game on television and was in all praises for his contemporary.
“Rangana Herath is one of my role models. I think he is a fabulous bowler. He just overcomes limitations every single day,” Ashwin told Gulf News. Pakistan chasing 136 to win were shot out for 114 and Herath went on to claim 100 wickets against Pakistan and also surpassed the 400-wicket mark. Ashwin called it a “great Test” and mentioned how this format can be unpredictable.
Heaping more praises on Herath, Ashwin added, “Age does wear the body out over a period of time. As far as Herath is concerned, he just keeps proving that he is a champion cricketer and he can use pressure to his good advantage. That is exactly what he did on the final day of the first Test.”
On being rested
Despite Ashwin’s recent success, the Indian think-tank have rested him for the limited-overs. Ashwin refused to comment on the decision but did say that things are beyond his control for such decisions.
“[As a player] and making decisions are definitely not something that I can comment on because I am not the one that is in charge and I am not the one who is responsible for making these decisions. So very clearly. as far as I am concerned, every day is about being better than what you have been previously. I am definitely focused on developing every single day and becoming a better cricketer because that is the only thing that will last.”
Ashwin said before adding that he is ready when the opportunity knocks, “Tomorrow, if I am given an opportunity, I should be the best I can be and probably even the better than the best that I can be.”
