Ravindra Jadeja’s five-for stuns New Zealand: Twitter reactions

The first Test of New Zealand in India Test series at Kanpur took many twists and turns with the visitors dominating most of the sessions. But India bounced back emphatically on Day 3 and chipped 9 New Zealand wickets within two sessions to restrict the visitors for 262 and have a healthy lead of 56 runs to their name. The ball is now in India’s court and a lot of credit for this goes to left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who had five wickets to his name. He got rid of the middle-order and was on a hat-trick at one stage.

New Zealand got stuck in the web spun by Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja as they do accounted for nine wickets between them. Day 3 started with New Zealand being in command with152 for the loss of one wicket. In fact, all wickets fell on Day 3 were picked by spinners. Jadeja now has the best average for any spinner in Asia who has taken above 50 wickets; it’s a huge record to boast off. Jadeja becomes the second spinner to have a fifer to his name in a team’s 500th Test match, interestingly; both are left-arm spinners.

India will now look to dominate the next session and win the Test as they have an advantage of a healthy lead, which once looked unlikely. Ashwin got the better of Tom Latham, Kane Williamson Mitchell Santner and BJ Watling, while Jadeja removed Ross Taylor, Luke Ronchi, Mark Craig, Ish Sodhi and Trent Boult. Jadeja also picked three wickets in an over, which probably put New Zealand in all sorts of trouble.  Few decisions would have gone the other way had DRS been used. New Zealand will have to come up with a strategy to counterattack spin as it would hold immense importance as the game progresses. Kane William son and Latham played well but succumbed to the spinners. Luke Ronchi looked good on 38 but fell prey to Jadeja’s persistence.
