The second phase of Ranji Trophy began January 23, 2025, with the clash between Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir. This is the first match after the BCCI issued players to take part in Ranji Trophy if they wish to be considered for selection in the Indian team. Big players of team India are hence playing this round of Ranji Trophy.

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the two big names in the Mumbai squad. Both of them opened the batting for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir. They scripted history as they became the first active Indian opening pair in Tests to open the batting for same Ranji Trophy team.

A lot was expected from the duo. However, both of the openers departed for single digit scored. Jaiswal could only manage to score 5 runs, while Rohit got dismissed after scoring 3 runs.

Rohit Sharma has now become the first Indian captain after 17 years to have featured in a Ranji Trophy match. The last captain to do so was Anil Kumble, which was back in 2008, when he secured a spot for Maharashtra. Rohit playing in Ranji Trophy marks his comeback to domestic cricket after almost a decade.

However, he is not leading the Mumbai side despite being the Indian captain. The duties of leading the team are being held by former Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane.
