On Wednesday, October 29, former India captain Rohit Sharma made history by becoming the oldest player ever to top the ICC ODI batting rankings. The Mumbai born cricketer, aged 38 years and 182 days, climbed two spots to claim the top rank for the first time in his career, displacing current Indian captain Shubman Gill.

Rohit’s rise to No.1 came on the back of his stellar performances in the recent ODI series against Australia. He scored 73 runs off 97 balls in the second ODI at Adelaide Oval on October 23 and followed it up with an unbeaten 121 off 125 balls in the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25.

With this achievement, Rohit joins an elite list of Indian cricketers who have reached the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings. He becomes the sixth Indian to achieve the feat, joining Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Sachin Tendulkar, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the distinguished group.

These two crucial innings caused the veteran batter’s rating points to rise sharply from 745 points the previous week.

Other Indian batters also saw notable movements in the latest rankings update. After a lackluster series, Shubman Gill dropped to third place, managing just 10,9 and 24 runs in his three outings, which cost him valuable rating points.

Despite a mixed series, Virat Kohli, another stalwart of Indian cricket, retained his fifth position in the rankings. In the final ODI at SCG, Kohli bounced back from two consecutive ducks with an unbeaten 74 runs from 81 balls. Following this performance, his rating points increased from 724 to 730.
