Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin continued to make merry during the morning session of Day Three of the first Test between India and the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Rohit and Ashwin put up a 280-run stand for the seventh wicket and it is now the highest partnership for that wicket for India in Test cricket. Rohit was ultimately dismissed for 177, and Ashwin went for 124, but with the lead over 200, India were in command of the game. India were bowled out for 453 and are 219 ahead.

Resuming the day on 354 for six, 120 ahead of West Indies, Rohit and Ashwin started off confidently.  Things started off with all the focus on Ashwin as he was unbeaten on 92 through the night. He first smashed Tino Best over point to move closer to the mark and was made to stay on 99 for a while. But, he did get the mark by pushing for the single through the off-side. It was his second Test hundred, both coming against West Indies.

At the other end, Rohit continued to look in sublime form. Outside the off-stump, he drove and cut with precision. Bowl it on his legs and he would work it away well. If there was one moment he looked in trouble when he edged through third-man.

Rohit moved to 150 and Ashwin was going on to 124, but then the former was dismissed by Veerasammy Permaul. Rohit padded one off Permaul and the umpire gave him out. Replays indicated that it would have missed the stumps. Rohit was unhappy, but got a good reception from the crowd. Earlier this year, Dhawan scored 187 on his Test debut and Rohit had the chance to break that record, the highest score for an Indian debutant.

Ashwin was then bowled by Shane Shillingford as he picked his fifth wicket. Then, India were ultimately bowled out for 453.

Brief scores:

West Indies 234 (Marlon Samuels 65; Shami Ahmed 4 for 71, Ravichandran Ashwin 2 for 52) trail India 453 (Rohit Sharma 177, Ravichandran Ashwin 124*; Shane Shillingford 6 for 167) by 219 runs.
