Roston Chase earns maiden ODI call against Afghanistan

Backing consistent performance in Tests, Roston Chase has received his maiden One-Day International (ODI) call for West Indies’ third game against Afghanistan. The 25-year old has been one of the most consistent players for West Indies in Test cricket since India’s tour of West Indies in 2016. Chase has so far played 10 Tests and has scored 728 runs at an impressive average of 48.53 including 2 centuries which came up at very crucial moments for his team. West Indies will be playing three ODIs against Afghanistan starting from June 9 which will be played at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, St Lucia.

“He was considered before for ODI selection, primarily because of his all-round ability,” Courtney Browne, Cricket West Indies’ chairman of selectors was quoted in a report from ESPNCricinfo. “With his prolific run scoring in the last Test series and his continued steady all-round performances in the PCL, we now feel it’s time to introduce him to ODI cricket.

“He was not among the leading run-scorers in the Super50 tournament earlier this year, but we believe with his skill set and the way he has been playing, he could be an asset. His outstanding efforts with the bat could not be ignored any longer, coupled with his useful bowling can only add value to our squad.”

West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has retained 12 out of 14-member squad were part of their last game against Pakistan. Wicketkeeper-batsman Chadwick Walton and left-arm spinner Veersammy Permaul have been left out due to poor run against Pakistan – West Indies’ last outing.

However, senior players like Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard could not fit in the 13-member squad. It is thought that the Caribbean side is hoping to form a strong team for the ODIs with respect to the qualification for ICC World Cup 2019 in England.

West Indies – the one time ICC Champions Trophy winner failed to qualify for the 2017 edition which is currently being played in England. Due to their discrepant run in the 50-over format, the WICB is hoping to form a core team to qualify and strengthen their case for the 2019 World Cup.
