The rumours of Virat Kohli being sacked from the team captaincy of Indian Premier League [IPL] team Royal Challengers Bangalore [RCB] have been summarily dismissed by the franchise.

With the change in team coaching personals, it was being speculated that after a spate of underwhelming seasons, RCB were lining up former South Africa international AB de Villiers as their new captain for the 2019 season. However, the three-time IPL finalists have denied the reports claiming Kohli will continue as captain.

“We can clarify on record that the news is incorrect and Virat Kohli is very much the captain of RCB for the next season as well,” an RCB spokesman was quoted as saying by India Today on Sunday.

In the past couple of weeks, RCB have ringed in massive changes in their backroom staff including sacking coach Daniel Vettori along with bowling coach Andrew McDonald and fielding coach Trent Woodhill.

Gary Kirsten, who coached India to world cup title in 2011, was named as his replacement and later on, Ashish Nehra was announced to have joined RCB’s coaching leadership team. Nehra was the RCB bowling mentor during IPL 2018 when the team failed to enter the playoffs, finishing sixth in the points table.

Kohli has been with RCB since the inception of IPL and in 163 matches, has scored 4948 runs with four centuries and 34 fifties.
