Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar on Sunday wished his cricket idol, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar who turned 67. Tendulkar has always considered Gavaskar a role model and an inspiration for him throughout his career. There have often been comparisons between the two world-class batsmen but Tendukar has always rated Gavaskar at a high pedestal and has shown to the media what Gavaskar meant to him. Gavaskar’s record of 34 centuries was infact broken by Tendulkar himself. Known as the ‘Little Master’ in the Indian cricket team in his era, Gavaskar was the first to reach 10,000 Test runs. Gavaskar is known as one of India’s best batsmen ever. In ODIs, he amassed 3,092 runs in 108 ODIs at an average of 35.13, with just a solitary century. His defence was among the strongest part of his technique and his wicket was the most difficult to get among the other Indian batsmen of his times. Gavaskar also served as the skipper of Indian team in both the formats. Between 1975 to 1985, he led India in 47 Tests, winning just nine matches. In ODIs, he led the side to just 14 wins in 37 matches. He was a part of the Indian team which historically lifted the World Cup in 1983. Not only the statistics and records have earned him the reputation he has today in the cricket fraternity, it was his professionalism and humbleness that made him an even more special icon. His knowledge, subtle jokes and humorous descriptions on air along with fellow commentators are among his qualities that are worth acknowledging.
