Sai Sudharsan's struggles continue as his Test spot is in doubt.
Indiaâs young batter Sai Sudharsan failed to make a mark in the second Test against South Africa at Barsapara Stadium, Guwahati, on Day 3, casting doubt over his place in the national team.
Coming in at number three after KL Rahulâs dismissal, Sudharsan scored just 15 runs before being caught at midwicket off Simon Harmerâs bowling. The flat pitch offered ideal batting conditions, but the Indian opener could not capitalize on the opportunity, a crucial knock that could have solidified his place in the side following Shubman Gillâs injury.
Sai Sudharsan’s struggles put India Test spot in doubt
Sudharsanâs struggles are part of a larger pattern. He had previously played three Tests in England, scoring only one half-century (61) in six innings. In the home series against West Indies, he managed just one half-century (89) in four innings across two matches. Additionally, he failed to score a fifty in two first-class matches for India A before this series.
Cricket analysts and former players suggest that Sudharsan must perform consistently in domestic cricket to retain his spot. âSai has talent, but in Tests, patience and timing are key. He has to convert starts into big scores if he wants to stay in contention,â said a cricket expert following the match.
India still faces a huge task against South Africa, who posted 489 in their first innings with contributions from Senuran Muthusamy (109) and Marco Jansen (93). While Sudharsanâs early dismissal added to Indiaâs challenges, experienced batters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul will need to build partnerships to keep India competitive.

With Indiaâs next Test series scheduled for 2026, Sudharsanâs performance in domestic cricket could determine whether he gets another opportunity at the international level. Failure to improve may result in him being dropped from Team India.
