India lost their opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan for naught once again, as they reached 13 for one at tea with an overall lead of 30 runs against South Africa on Day Two of the first Test. India had earlier bowled out South Africa for 184 runs, as they earned a slender lead of 17 runs in the first innings. Dhawan’s poor run continued as he bagged a pair at the venue where he made a scintillating debut two years ago, scoring 187 versus Australia. At tea, the right-handed batting pair of Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara was at the crease with India looking to produce a strong batting performance. Dhawan was dismissed by South African seamer Vernon Philander, who had dismissed him for a duck in the first innings as well. In the first essay, while Dhawan was caught at the first slip, on Friday the left-hander’s catch was taken by the fielder at the second slip.

Vijay, who remains the top-scorer on this spin-friendly wicket at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali with 75 in the first innings, started off with two boundaries off Philander. South Africa suffered a blow in their second innings when their pace spearhead Dale Steyn was forced out of action due to a groin strain. It has been reported that Steyn will not be available for bowling on the second day. Vijay was not out on 11 while Pujara reached 2 not out at tea.

Earlier in the session, a splendid spin bowling performance from India’s Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja forced South Africa too crash at a first-innings score of 184 runs, as India obtained a slender lead. Ashwin completed 150 wickets in Test cricket, and this was his 13th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Jadeja was very impressive on the second day morning, as he claimed three wickets for 55 runs.

Brief scores:

India 201 (Murali Vijay 75; Dean Elgar 4 for 22) & 13 for 1 (Murali Vijay 11; Vernon Philander 1 for 12) lead South Africa 184 (Dean Elgar 37, Hashim Amla 43, Ab de Villiers 63; Ravichandran Ashwin 5 for 51, Ravindra Jadeja 3 for 55, Amit Mishra 2 for 35) by 30 runs.
