Shooting Stars squad named for Sri Lanka tour

Cricket Australia s National Selection panel has on Wednesday announced a 13-player Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars squad to tour Sri Lanka from 27 March 11 April. Made up of Australia s best emerging players aged 21 and under, the side will be coached by former Australian fast-bowler and Women s Youth Coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick, with Victoria and Melbourne Stars Coach David Hemp acting as Assistant Coach. The squad will assemble at the Bupa National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Brisbane on Sunday 26 March before flying to Colombo where they will play three One-Day fixtures and three Twenty20s against Sri Lanka. A star on the rise, 15-year-old leg-spinner Rachel Trenaman has been included the side for the first time having featured in the Governor-General s XI that defeated South Africa in November last year before making her domestic debut for NSW just five days later. Wicket-keeper/batter Georgia Redmayne, 23, has been included as the sole overage player in the side after the former NSW local produced a breakout season with the bat that also saw her become the first player to hit a century for Tasmania in the Women s National Cricket League (WNCL) this season.

Speaking following the selection of the side, National Selector Shawn Flegler said: The players that have been included in this squad were all standouts across the summer, with some really impressive performances for their domestic sides and Women s Big Bash League clubs. It s been really pleasing to see players like Georgia and Rachel perform strongly at an underage level for the last few seasons whilst those tied to WBBL clubs all played pivotal roles for their respective teams this season. This tour will allow these players to experience cricket in different conditions and will play an important role in their ongoing development as future national players.
