In Virat Kohli’s absence, India summoned Shreyas Iyer for the No. 3 spot for the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka at Dharamsala. He became the 219th cricketer to represent India in ODIs. During Ashish Nehra’s farewell match against New Zealand last month, Shreyas had made his T20I debut. Although he did not get to bat in the first match, he scored a brisk 23 including 4 fours.

In all, three players have made ODI debut for India this year: Kuldeep Yadav vs West Indies at Port of Spain, Shardul Thakur against Sri Lanka at Colombo, and Shreyas against Sri Lanka at Dharamsala. Iyer received his ODI cap from MS Dhoni.

India, however, had as many as 14 debutants in the format since the 2015 World Cup. For that matter, the first ever ODI player for India was Syed Abid Ali in 1974 against England at Leeds.

Iyer opened his account with a lovely flick: keeping his head still and getting behind the line of the ball, Shreyas maneuvered it through the leg-side field. He came to bat when India lost Shikhar Dhawan for a duck. It is also Rohit Sharma’s first as an ODI captain: he became the 24th ODI captain for India and 39th across formats.
