Shreyas Iyer‘s tale as a batsman is an interesting one. After a mind-blowing Ranji season, finishing as the highest run-getter with 1321 runs in the tournament, Iyer’s form let him down in IPL 2016. But that shouldn’t have stopped him from getting a place in the Indian team touring Zimbabwe in a few days. Iyer’s exclusion came as a surprise to many and his disappointment is justified to some extent. Iyer though has some reason to cheer up as he is expected to be a part of the India A team which will play against Australia A in two four-day matches as well as in a quadrangular series which will feature Australia A, South Africa A and Cricket Australia’s National Performance Squad. Iyer, who bagged the ‘CEAT Domestic Cricketer of the Year’ award on Monday expressed his heartbreak for not being picked by the Indian selectors but vowed to earn his place. He said – ” Obviously , I’m a bit disappointed, but my job is to keep performing well, just keep scoring runs. It (not being picked) can be a positive as it will keep motivating me and I will keep working hard.” (As quoted by TOI) ALSO READ: Exclusion of Shreyas Iyer, Shahbaz Nadeem for upcoming Zimbabwe, West Indies tour baffling

Meanwhile, former Indian skipper Dilip Vengsarkar who was also present at the award function and received the Lifetime Achievement Award, expressed his thoughts on Iyer’s exclusion as well. “He’s done extremely well for Mumbai in the last year in the Ranji Trophy . He hit a brilliant hundred in the Ranji final (against Saurashtra), which was witnessed by all the five selectors. He has not been picked in the Indian team, which is unfortunate. He deserves to be picked to play for India in all the three formats. I told him: `You’ve to score a double hundred. Then nobody can drop you, you are an excellent player,” said Vengsarkar.

However, one of the selectors said it was very difficult to find a place for Iyer in the 15-16 man squad and that is why he probably missed out. “Which batsman do we drop to pick Shreyas. You tell us?,” said the selector.
