Shreyas Iyer is one of the most consistent batters in white-ball cricket, and has gained a massive boost in his reputation with a heroic campaign for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Now it has been reported that Shreyas has joined the race to become India’s upcoming white-ball captain.
Leading the Indian team is a very tricky thing to talk about as of now. With Shubman Gill being the current Test captain, Rohit Sharma leading the ODI side and Suryakumar in the T20I side, Indian team has three different captains in three formats. However, it is well understood that as per the conditions are, the system is not going to sustain for long period of time.
As per the situation and the conditions, Indian team is going to have one strong white-ball and one red-ball captain in the next few years.
Suryakumar Yadav being unable to safeguard a position in the 50-over team, however, has dealt a lot of harm in chances of him leading the ODI side. As Shreyas Iyer has gained a lot of boost on his reputation with his leadership skills in IPL 2025, a report in Indian Express has claimed he is officially in the race to success Rohit Sharma as the next white-ball captain.
“Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” the report quoted an official.
India’s current ODI captain Rohit Sharma has not come up with a retirement date as of now, but from the way he bid his farewell from T20I and Test format, it is not easy to predict when the Mumbaikar will retire from the 50-over format as well. However, whenever the decision comes, Shreyas Iyer being given the leadership role is seriously going to be discussed.
