Gill dethrones Babar to claim number one spot in ICC Rankings
India batter Shubman Gill rose to the top of the ICC ODI batter rankings with a stunning performance in the 3-match ODI series against England, Gill surpassed Pakistan batter Babar Azam to claim top spot in the rankings on Wednesday.
Gill scored a highly impressive tally of 259 runs in 3 matches against England earlier this month. In the 3 matches he played against England, Gill racked up scores of 87, 60 and 112, at a superb average of 86.33.
This is the second time that Gill has become the number 1 batter in the one-day format, previously doing so during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Gill amassed 796 points to claim the top spot in the rankings while Babar dropped to second spot with 773 points. India skipper Rohit Sharma is currently third on the rankings with 751 points. This comes after the India skipper played a fantastic knock of 119 runs in the second ODI against England.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana climbed to the top of the ICC men’s ODI bowling rankings for the first time in his career, surpassing Afghanistan turner Rashid Khan. Theekshana performed brilliantly in the recently-concluded ODI series against Australia where the Lankan Lions ended up winning comprehensively.
Elsewhere, India spinner Kuldeep Yadav is up to the fourth position while South Africa turner Keshav Maharaj rose to the sixth spot. New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner climbed 4 places to reach the seventh spot on the bowler rankings.
