Ahead of India’s much-awaited encounter against Australia in Perth which is set to commence from November 22, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel gave an update on fitness of young batter Shubman Gill, saying that he is improving on “day-to-day basis”.

Morkel also revealed that the decision on his selection will be taken on the day of the match so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Gill does feature in the Perth Test.

Gill’s injury has been one of the biggest talking points ahead of the first Test in Perth. The batter sustained a thumb injury while fielding in the slips and didn’t return for the second day of the intra-squad match.

“Shubman is improving on a day-by-day basis. We will take a call on the morning of the Test. He played well in the match simulation during the build-up, so fingers crossed,” Morkel said.

Gill has been in great form in Test cricket this year, scoring 806 runs in 10 matches and averaging above 47. He has scored 3 centuries and fifties each and his best score is 119*.

Morkel also revealed that the team management is keeping a close eye on veteran pacer Mohammed Shami, who recently recovered from his ankle injury and took 7 wickets in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy encounter against Madhya Pradesh.

“We are keeping a close eye on Shami. He has been out for a year. For us, it is a massive win that he is back playing. How we can give him the best support to find his feet again? Working closely with the people back home. He is a world-class bowler,” Morkel said.
