SLC, Chandimal deny witchcraft helped in PAK Tests whitewash

Sri Lanka‘s Test series victory over Pakistan in UAE had left many surprised. A struggling Lankan side becoming the first team to inflict series defeat on Pakistan in their adopted home ground since 2009 was certainly unexpected. A few days later, Sri Lankan Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal revealed that he had sought a sorceress’s blessing before the series, which resulted in the 2-0 whitewash. Social media users took a jibe at the young captain, but Chandimal has come out in the open defending his so-called claims.

Earlier, it was reported that the sorceress was the mother of a friend of Chandimal. She had even claimed that she had cast a spell on Pakistan to ensure Sri Lanka’s victory at the request of Dayasiri Jayasekara, Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister. In response, Jayasekara has threatened to sue the sorceress for her statements.

Sorcerers are frequently called upon in Sri Lanka been common in the past. Politicians, business leaders and sportspeople all have faith in witchcraft or astrology. Former President Mahinda Rajapakse even sought advice of his personal astrologer before calling an election two years ahead of schedule in January 2015, only to lose badly.

Since the victories in the Tests, Sri Lanka fared miserably in the limited-overs series against Pakistan. They failed to win a single match in (5) ODIs and (3) T20Is, thus ending the tour on a low.
