South Africa announced their 15-member squad for the first Test of the three-match Test series against India on Friday. Chris Morris who recovered from a groin injury returns to the Test squad replacing Duanne Olivier. However, all eyes will be on Dale Steyn who has not not played in whites for over a year after injuring his shoulder during the Australia series. He did not play against Zimbabwe as well as he was down with viral infection. Meanwhile, Faf du Plessis will return to lead the side after being ruled out from the 4-day pink-ball cricket against Zimbabwe. On the other hand, South Africa have not picked a back-up wicketkeeper for Quinton de Kock who picked up a hamstring injury during the Zimbabwe match.

De Kock is expected to recover ahead of the first Test. AB de Villiers who was the stand-in captain for the 4-day Test, was handed the wicketkeeping duty. If de Kock fails to recover on time, the selectors would hand over the wicketkeeping duties to de Villiers again. South Africa will assemble in Cape Town on January 2 for their preparations.
