South Africa beat England on day five of the third Test at Lord’s on Monday to become the number one ranked Test team.

Vernon Philander took five wickets in the second innings for South Africa as England struggled to chase a huge total on the fifth day.

The Proteas had to face stiff resistance from wicket-keeper batsman Matt Prior but he was dismissed by Philander as England needed just 52 runs to win.

Earlier, half-centuries by Jonathan Trott and Jonathan Bairstow brought England back into the match.

England needed 125 runs in the final session with two wickets remaining to win the match and level the series.Matt Prior and Graeme Swann were unbeaten at the crease when tea was taken.

Brief Scores: South Africa 309 & 351 (Hashim Amla 121, AB de Villiers 43; Steven Finn 4 for 74) beat England 315 & 294 (Matt Prior 73, Jonathan Trott 63, Jonny Bairstow 54; Vernon Philander 5 for 30) by 51 runs.
