South Africa amassed a mammoth 552 for five in the first innings of the first Test against the West Indies at Centurion. This after the visitors inserted them into bat, a decision influenced by the rain that preceded the match. The West Indies may have felt the decision stood vindicated at the end of the first session on Day one as they managed to pick up three timely wickets. The session after lunch was the beginning of a long and tiring leather hunt as Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers took the West Indies bowlers to the sword. Both de Villiers and Amla notched up their respective hundreds in the final session of Day one which saw West Indies shoulders droop further as the pair registered the highest fourth wicket partnership for South Africa. To compound the problems of the tourists, they lost the services of their best bowler on show; Kemar Roach which abstained them from taking the second new ball. Roach didn’t return to bowl on day two either.

Amla and de Villiers were finally separated early on Day two as de Villiers was snapped up by Suliman Benn against the run of play for 152. South Africa continued to pile on the misery for the West Indies as records galore for the hosts. The post lunch session on day two began in anticipation of Amla’s double hundred which coincided with South Africa amassing 500 on the board. Stiaan Van Zyl followed suit notching up a maiden Test hundred on debut. The pair surpassed their hundred run stand in the process as well. Amla recognised the need for speed while the debutant was closing in on his century, he departed in an attempt to up the ante for 208. Suliman Benn accounted for Amla’s wicket who holed out to long-on. Amla’s was the highest score by a South African captain at home, and also the highest individual score at Centurion. While Van Zyl became only the fifth South African batsman to score a hundred on debut. Interestingly all hundreds on debut for South Africa have come post reinstatement.
