De Villiers said after the game, “Amazing game of cricket, this is probably the most electric crowd I’ve ever heard in my life. I couldn’t ask anything more from my boys. It’s hurting that we are going out. That’s probably the worst thing of all.”

“The passion did make a big difference, I hope the people back home will be proud of us. I felt we had a good fielding as a team in the tournament. We had very good individual performances as well. To the teams in the final, all the best.”

South Africa were playing in their fourth semi-final in World Cup history, and this defeat is their third. They had played in the semi-finals in 1992, 1999 and 2007. While they had lost in 1992 and 2007, the one in the 1999 World Cup ended in a tie.
