Former India legend and veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a disappointing season with the ball in the 2025 edition.

Ashwin had already retired from international cricket during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, after which he featured only in franchise cricket such as the TNPL and IPL.

The off-spinner made his IPL debut in 2009 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and went on to enjoy a remarkable career in the tournament. He returned to CSK in IPL 2025, when the franchise bought him back for INR 9.75 crore in the mega-auction, marking a fitting return and farewell in the yellow jersey.

Over his 17-season IPL career, Ashwin represented five teams — CSK, Rising Pune Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. In 221 matches, he scored 833 runs including a half-century and claimed 187 wickets, placing him fifth on the list of all-time wicket-takers in IPL history. He was part of CSK’s title-winning squads in 2010 and 2011, and also played in multiple finals — 2012, 2013, 2015 (CSK), 2017 (RPS), and 2022 (RR).

Announcing his decision on X (formerly Twitter), Ashwin wrote:
Special day and hence a special beginning.”

They say every ending will have a new start; my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ravichandran Ashwin announces his IPL retirement.

Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years, and most importantly, the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me,” he added, hinting at continuing his journey in other franchise leagues.
