The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have confirmed that about 100 contracted players have not received their salaries since the ICC 2011 World Cup, which the island nation co-hosted with India and Bangladesh.
SLC is under a huge debt after the capital expenditure on the recent World Cup, and there are doubts whether the SLC would pay the salaries in the next two months, BBC reported.
“There is a truth in those media reports to a certain extent,” SLC chairman Upali Dharmadasa said, adding that the board is making efforts to make payments as soon as they get the remaining payments from ICC for co-hosting the tournament.
“The ICC still owes us $4-5 millions,” he added.
The Sri Lankan sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage had earlier informed that they still owe more than $18.1 million to the Chinese construction firm that built the brand new stadium in president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s hometown Hambantota.
