Rain abandons play on Day. See you all at 9.45 am IST tomorrow, as the match will begin 15 minutes early on Wednesday.

  • 3:18 PM IST

However, Sri Lanka did look threatening enough with the back-to-back wickets of David Warner and Joe Burns. We all know a lot will depend on Rangana Herath in this series, as the other Sri Lankan spinners have only looked like leaking a lot of runs today.

  • 3:17 PM IST

It has been a terrific day for the Australian side, with their bowlers showing a lot of promise on a flat deck which has some turn for the spinners. Mitchell Starc’s early wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne opened the floodgates for Sri Lanka, and since then Australia have dominated most of the game.

  • 2:59 PM IST

ALERT: There is a delay in the start of the final session as dark clouds have covered the field and there are strong chances of rain. Stay tuned for updates.

  • 2:46 PM IST

It’s time for tea on Day 1 with Australia reaching 66 for 2, trailing by 51 more runs. Smith and Khawaja began nervously but their aggressive play pushed Sri Lanka on backfoot again. Stay tuned!

  • 2:35 PM IST

Live Cricket Score, AUSTRALIA 64/2 in Overs 18 | BATTING: Steven Smith 26(40), Usman Khawaja 25 (48): Smith and Khawaja have added more than 50 runs so far to keep Australia going, and remain in command. The Sri Lankans are leaking boundaries at the moment, and there is no pressure on Australia whatsoever. Australia are about 50 runs behind Sri Lanka.

  • 2:21 PM IST

Live Cricket Score, AUSTRALIA 47/2 in Overs 14 | BATTING: Steven Smith 14(27), Usman Khawaja 20(37): The spin trio of Herath, Dilruwan Perera and Sandakan has been unleashed on the Australians. Let’s see how long can Smith and Khawaja survive there. Khawaja however went after Perera for two back-to-back boundaries. First to mid-wicket. The next lovely shot was cut through the point.

  • 1:55 PM IST

Live Cricket Score, AUSTRALIA 19/2 in Overs 8 | BATTING: Steven Smith 5 (12), Usman Khawaja 6 (16): Lot of buzz around the middle with Sri Lanka trying to play on the Australian nerves. Khawaja has lived dangerously so far, with Smith looking far more convincing. Sri Lanka have wasted one of their reviews, appealing for a leg-before when Herath’s delivery had struck Khawaja way outside off.

  • 1:42 PM IST

Live Cricket Score, AUSTRALIA 3/1 in Overs 3 | BATTING: Joe Burns 3 (9), Usman Khawaja 0 (4): A good start for the Sri Lankans as David Warner has been dismissed played-on. The decision could have gone either way with Nuwan Pradeep’s foot landing outside the crease, with only a small portion behind.

OUT! David Warner b Nuwan Pradeep 0 (5)

  • 1:40 PM IST

Live Cricket Score, AUSTRALIA 7/2 in Overs 4 | BATTING: Usman Khawaja 0 (4): BOWLED HIM! Rangana Herath has found the way through Joe Burns’ defense, cleaning up the batsman right through the gate and putting Australia into trouble. Is this going to be one of those interesting low-scoring games? Wait on!

OUT! Joe Burns b Rangana Herath 3 (15)

  • 1:24 PM IST

Sri Lanka’s total of 117 is their fourth lowest in Test cricket against Australia (home or away). Stay tuned, the Aussie openers will be in action soon.

  • 1:23 PM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 117 in Overs 34.2 | BATTING: Lakshan Sandakan 19 (15): Rangana Herath was declared leg-before off Starc and a flurry of boundaries by Lakshan Sandakan has pushed Sri Lanka to 117, which is their fourth lowest total. Nuwan Pradeep is the last man to be dismissed, caught at first slip off Steven O’Keefe.
OUT! Rangana Herath lbw Mitchell Starc 6 (10)

    OUT! Nuwan Pradeep c Steven Smith b Steven O’Keefe 0 (4)

  • 1:05 PM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 95/8 in Overs 31 | BATTING: Lakshan Sandakan 1 (4), Rangana Herath 2 (5): Lyon strikes again! The off-spinner knocks down Kusal Perera’s off stump with a straight ball, summing up Sri Lanka’s day at Pallekele.

OUT! Kusal Perera b Nathan Lyon 20 (15)

  • 12:45 PM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 87/7 in Overs 29 | BATTING: Kusal Perera 15 (10): Once again Australia make a fine start, with Nathan Lyon getting Dhananjaya de Silva getting caught at short leg on the second ball of the second session. And two balls later, Dilruwan Perera, who has 155 runs in 10 Tests with a highest of 95, has been trapped in front of the wickets. Australia in complete command!

OUT! Dhananjaya de Silva c Joe Burns b Nathan Lyon 24 (38)

OUT Dilruwan Perera lbw Nathan Lyon 0 (2)

  • 12:05 PM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 84/5 in Overs 28 | BATTING: Dhananjaya de Silva 24 (37), Kusal Perera 12 (9): Kusal Perera has announced himself in the middle with two terrific boundaries, off Hazelwood in the final over before lunch. Those were two of the most glorious strokes play all day today, but Sri Lanka would know their position is not at all safe in this game.

  • 12:00 PM IST

It was Australia all the way in the first session on a flat deck, on which Sri Lanka elected to bat after winning the toss. Mitchell Starc was ruthless as ever, but Josh Hazlewood wrecked the hosts’ batting with 3 wickets in that session. Sri Lanka running the risk of being bowled out for a paltry total. Stay tuned, we will be back shortly!

  • 11:51 AM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 67/5 in Overs 26 | BATTING: Dhananjaya de Silva 19 (34): Josh Hazlewood strikes and he has removed Dinesh Chandimal very close to the lunch break. And another one bites the dust! A perfect pitched up delivery close to his off stump making Chandimal drive. The ball took an outside edge, and Peter Nevill took a fine, diving catch to his left. Sri Lanka in tatters!

OUT! Dinesh Chandimal c Peter Nevill b Josh Hazlewood 15 (54)

  • 11:36 AM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 59/4 in Overs 21 | BATTING: Dinesh Chandimal 11 (33), Dhananjaya de Silva 15 (25): Far too much of damage has already been done from Sri Lankan perspective, as after winning the toss and deciding to bat first, they would not have envisioned such a poor start. DInesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva have taken them past 50-run mark, and their only aim right now will be to remain unbeaten till the lunch break.

  • 11:20 AM IST

Far too many wickets lost for Sri Lanka. Chandimal now has the responsibility of taking them to a respectable total…

  • 11:17 AM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 43/4 in Overs 15 | BATTING: Dinesh Chandimal 11(18), Dhananjaya de Silva 0(4): Oh dear, Sri Lanka lose their skipper, leaving Chandimal with no choice but to stick around till the end. O’Keefe opens his account in the match. He manages to get good turn, Mathews is tempted, comes forward. While pushing one just outside off, Smith takes a diving catch at the first slip. OUT! Angelo Mathews c Steven Smith b Steve O’Keefe 15(24)

  • 10:53 AM IST

By the way it is an excellent idea to have a leg gully in place. Knowing Mathews, he always goes for runs rather than blocking…

  • 10:52 AM IST

Mitchell Starc has Angelo Mathews’ wicket on his mind. Maybe he can come around the wicket and try and attack the stumps more.

  • 10:51 AM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 26/3 in Overs 11 | BATTING: Dinesh Chandimal 1(12), Angelo Mathews 8(10): OUT! Another one goes! Kaushal gets a thick outside edge and Voges at the first slip takes the first catch of the game, an excellent low catch. With this both the openers are already sent back to the dugout, Sri Lanka lose 2 wickets inside 10 overs. A typical situation for them, their only saviours, Mathews and Chandimal are at the crease. Sri Lanka will put up some fight, provided these do come up with something magical. OUT! Kaushal Silva c Adam Voges b Josh Hazlewood 4(25)

  • 10:39 AM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 17/2 in Overs 7 | BATTING: Kausal Silva 3(19), Dinesh Chandimal 1(4): OUT! Plain disastrous start from the hosts. Mendis begins well with two back-to-back boundaries but did not last for long. While the Sri Lankan looked to play it towards on-side, he misses it and is struck on the pads. Mendis is seen discussing if it should be reviewed or not. 15 seconds up, time up! Mendis has no choice but walk back! Good for Sri Lanka as it was clear, Hazlewood was hitting on the pads. Chandimal in. Two wickets fall inside 6 overs. Australia already ahead in the game. OUT! Kusal Mendis LBW Josh Hazlewood 8(7)

  • 10:34 AM IST

Live Cricket Score, Sri Lanka 14/1 in Overs 5 | BATTING: Kausal Silva 1(13), Kusal Mendis 8(5): OUT! MITCHELL STARC!! The fast bowler hits on the pads, Australians are convinced it is hitting the leg stump, Karunaratne is not. Reviews: The replays show it was PLUMB! Australia strikes, Sri Lanka lose an early wicket. It was a MILESTONE moment for Starc as it was his 200th First-Class wicket. Kusal Mendis in. Goes off the mark with two boundaries. The first one was classy, punches through the covers. The second one a gift after poor fielding from Hazlewood at fine leg. Eight runs and a wicket off the 5th over. OUT! Dimuth Karunaratne 5(12) LBW Mitchell Starc

  • 10:29 AM IST

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s coverage of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. I am Sakshi Gupta and I will be bringing you all the updates from Day 1. Sri Lanka are currently going through a transition phase and are yet to cope after the retirements of legends like Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. They were crushed by England in their previous series and also lost to India at home. They however beat a depleted West Indies side, last time they played on home soil. Ranked No. 1 in the world, Australia have a much settled side and with Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan in the backroom staff to help their bowlers, they will certainly be a threat in the series. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Sri Lanka vs Australia, 1st Test at Pallekele

Australia have been dominant in Tests and One-Day Internationals (ODI) under the leadership of Steven Smith. They recently won the tri-series in the Caribbean and also secured home and away Test series wins against West Indies. They also have beaten New Zealand, both home and away. Playing in sub continental conditions will be a totally different ball game for Australia. It is most likely that they will play two spinners in the series. Sri Lanka vs Australia 2016, 1st Test at Pallekele: Preview

Nathan Lyon is the first-choice spinner in Tests. He might be supported by Steve O’Keefe, who is a left-arm orthodox bowler.  Sri Lanka have quite a few new faces in the team. It will be interesting to see as to who gets a debut in this game.
