Sri Lanka lost their skipper Angelo Mathews shortly before lunch on the third day as India strengthened their hold in the first Test at Galle. Sri Lanka were tottering at 95 for 5 when Mathews fell for 39, after battling for the most of the first session. Sri Lanka were trailing by 97 runs, and the possibilities of an innings defeat is looming over the hosts. Mathews added 87 runs with Kumar Sangakkara to keep the Indians at bay when the Sri Lankans lost an early wicket in form of Dhammika Prasad, who fell on the first ball of the day from Varun Aaron. Mathews faced 63 balls and batted fluently to score 39 runs, with the help of a six and four hits to the fence. On the other hand, Sangakkara looked in his usual elements but a brilliant catch from Ajinkya Rahane in he first slip ended his final innings at Galle. Sangakkara cracked five boundaries and faced 70 balls to score 40 runs. It was unfortunate that despite batting so well, the left-handed legend did not complete his half-century.

Earlier in the day, Varun Aaron struck with the very first ball of the morning on Day Three of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at Galle, getting nightwatchman Dhammika Prasad to fend off a short ball to Ajinkya Rahane at gully. With that wicket, Sri Lanka crashed to 5 for 3. Kumar Sangakkara was at the other end and Angelo Mathews made his way in at No. 5, ahead of Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal. Unless Sangakkara and co. can pull off something special, Sri Lanka are in danger of losing the match today itself. Live Scorecard: India vs Sri Lanka 2015, 1st Test at Galle, Day 3
