On the first day of the 1st Test match between Sri Lanka and Australia at Pallekele, the visitors skittled out the Sri Lankans for a paltry 117, thanks to the Australian bowlers’ clinical bowling performance. In reply, Australia lost openers David Warner and Joe Burns, and were reduced to 7 for 2. However, southpaw Usman Khawaja and captain Steven Smith added 59 for the third wicket to end the Day 1 at 66 for 2. Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and elected to bat first, expecting to put up a big first innings total on the scoreboard. Nonetheless, the tactic backfired as Josh Hazlewood ran through Sri Lanka’s top-order and took three crucial wickets of Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal. Mitchell Marsh, who was out due to ankle injury, looked in good form and scalped two wickets of Dimuth Karunaratne and Rangana Herath.

However, credit goes to the spinners as well; while Nathan Lyon pocketed three wickets, Steve O’Keefe picked up two wickets, including Mathews and Nuwan Pradeep.

For Sri Lanka, it was Dhananjaya de Silva who top scored with 24 off off 38 balls, inclusive of three boundaries. For the hosts to put Australia on the back foot, they will have to make early inroads in the first session itself.
