James Taylor and Joe Root built a small partnership after England lost two early wickets. Taylor looked fluent as he had played some beautiful strokes. England had reached 56 for two after 15 overs. Cook was dismissed by Sachithra Senanayake leg-before in the eight over of the England innings . Sri Lanka started well as Senanayake who came onto bowl the second over picked up the wicket of Moeen Ali. Ali who went for the wild slog missed the ball and returned back to pavilion after scoring four runs. Cook started the innings well for England as he hit Tillakaratne Dilshan for two boundaries in the first over.

Earlier, the match resumed after it was disrupted by rain on Wednesday. Sri Lanka who were put onto bat on Wednesday by England were bowled out for 239 by England. Chris Woakes picked up six wickets for England while Chris Jordan chipped in with two wickets. Kumar Sangakkara top scored for Sri Lanka with 91 runs.
