Pakistan: 244/6 I Overs 70

Sarfraz Ahmed 66(81), Abdur Rehman 1(8)

Stumps on Day 2. Mixed day for both sides. While Pakistan got off to a good start coutesy the top order, Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera did much of the destruction in the second and third sessions, with Pakistan tottering at 140 for five at one point. It took Sarfraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq a 93-run partnership to save the day for the visitors as they ended on 244 with the possibility of grabbing the lead on the third day still wide open.

For the hosts, Herath was the star of the day as he finished with figures of five for 98 and became the third Sri Lankan to reach the 250-wicket mark in the process as well. Much depends on him tomorrow if the Lankans are to wipe off the Pakistani lower order and start their second innings with a decent lead.

Pakistan: 233/6 I Overs 67.2

Sarfraz Ahmed 51(66), Abdur Rehman

OUT! Asad Shafiq b Herath 42(90)

Herath picks his fifth wicket and acts as the spoilsport for Pakistan by ending a fruitful 93-run partnership in the dying overs of the second Day. Herath bowls a brilliant delivery by pitching the ball outside of off-stump. Shafiq tries to play a front-foot defense, only to completely miss the ball and get his off-stump rattled. The next batsman to come in is Abdur Rehman

Pakistan: 224/5 I Overs 64

Asad Shafiq 38(77), Sarfraz Ahmed 51(66)

Sarfraz brings up his well-deserved half-century with a front-foot shot. This is his Sarfraz’s third consecutive fifty and he is in spanking form at the moment!

Pakistan: 209/5 I Overs 59

Asad Shafiq 33(62), Sarfraz Ahmed 41(51)

The partnership now touches the 69 runs and the duo of Shafiq and Sarfraz now aim to take it to the century-mark. Good recovery for Pakistan courtesy the batsmen at the crease and the game is back in balance. Sarfraz in the meantime is nearing his fourth Test half-century. He has played a swift innings which includes three boundaries.

Pakistan: 192/5 I Overs 54

Asad Shafiq 26(50), Sarfraz Ahmed 31(33)

The partnership crosses the fifty-run mark as Shafiq and Sarfraz are doing the job of damage-control at the crease.  The last recognised batsmen at the crease, the duo have around an hour left before they can carry their score over to the next day without losing a wicket. Mathews in the mean time will look to reintroduce his primary weapon, Herath, back into the attack in order to break this dangerous-looking partnership, which still has the potential to wrest the control away from the hosts.

Pakistan: 167/5 I Overs 49

Asad Shafiq 13(32), Sarfraz Ahmed 19(21)

Sarfraz and Shafiq attempt to slow Sri Lanka’s march down by playing cautious shots. The Pakistani hopes are now pinned on the two as Herath & co. look to grab the remaining wickets in a scurry. In the meantime, skipper Mathews gets Dhammika Prasad back into action, giving Herath some rest.

Pakistan: 140/5 I Overs 42.1

Asad Shafiq 5(12), Sarfraz Ahmed 0(0)

OUT! Misbah-ul-Haq c Dickwella b Herath 5(19)

Pakistan in dire straits now. The visitors lose four wickets for just 30 runs. Herath now looks unstoppable as he picks his fourth wicket by removing the last experienced batsman in the side. Sri Lanka on top at the moment and will now look to maintain their dominance for the rest of the day. Pakistan on the path of self-destruction once again!

Pakistan: 131/4 I Overs 39

Misbah-ul-Haq 1(13), Asad Shafiq 0(0)

OUT! Younis Khan  c Dickwella b Herath 13(26)

The centurion from Galle is dismissed in the most unusual manner imaginable. Younis plays a delivery that is pitching outside off stump that then deflected off his boot. Kushal Silva at the silly point dives forward to catch it and then throws it to the keeper, to whom the catch is awarded by the third umpire after a couple of referrals.

With their most experienced batsman gone, things look extremely shaky for the Pakistanis now. Unless they get a couple of solid partnerships along in their way, the match pretty much belongs to Sri Lanka, or atleast the day.

Pakistan: 126/3 I Overs 36

Younis Khan 10(19), Misbah-ul-Haq 0(1)

Umpires call for Tea as the Pakistan look a bit shaky with a couple of quick dismissals. Younis and Misbah share the burden of taking over from Ahmed Shehzad and steering Pakistan past Sri Lanka’s total.

Pakistan: 122/3 I Overs 34.5

Younis Khan 5(11), Misbah-ul-Haq 0(0)

OUT! Ajmal Shehzad  c Dickwella b Perera 58(85)

Dilruwan Perera gets the big fish! Pitched outside leg-stump, Shehzad tries to pat it only for keeper Niroshan Dickwella to collect it safely. With a few minutes left for tea, this dismissal should surely have some impact on the Pakistani momentum.

Pakistan: 110/2 I Overs 31.3

Ajmal Shehzad 51(73), Younis Khan 0(0)

OUT! Azhar Ali c Mathews  b Herath 32(43)

Herath strikes again!! Ali comes down the track in order to smash Herath over mid-on, ends up misfiring it and giving skipper Mathews a simple catch at short mid-wicket. End of the 63-run partnership between Shehzad and Ali. Veteran Younis Khan walks in, hoping to repeat his Galle heroics.

Pakistan: 100/1 I Overs 29

Ajmal Shehzad 51(73), Azhar Ali 23(43)

Ajmal Shehzad reaches his second Test half-century in a patient innings that included five boundaries. The Pakistan batsman have been great in their job so far. The second-wicket partnership is now worth 53 runs and the batsmen at the crease now look to stay at least till the end of the day.

Pakistan: 80/1 I Overs 22

Ajmal Shehzad 41 (54), Azhar Ali 13 (43)

Shehzad nears his second half-century as the second-wicket partnership is quite settled by now. The Sri Lankan bowlers are getting desperate for a wicket now as Shehzad and Ali look set to take the partnership to a 100 runs.

Pakistan: 68/1 I Overs 17

Ajmal Shehzad 37 (43), Azhar Ali 5(24)

Pakistan survive a dismissal scare as Ajmal Shehzad was initially adjudged out on the penultimate ball of Herath’s over. Shehzad went for a review which turned out to be a well-judged one in which it the ball was seen touching the back thigh, leading to third umpire Bruce Oxenford reversing the decision. While Herath still looks dangerous for the visitors, Pakistan are scoring at a steady rate of four runs per over.

Pakistan: 47/1 I Overs 8.4

Ajmal Shehzad 21(18), Azhar Ali 0(0)

OUT! Khurram Manzoor c Dickwella b Herath 23(35)

Herath finally manages to remove the dangerous-looking Khurram Manzoor. Angelo’s Mathews’ decision to introduce spin early in the game works. The promising 47-run opening stand comes to an end. Lunch anytime now.

Pakistan: 44/0 I Overs 8.0

Khurram Manzoor 23(33), Ahmed Shehzad 18(16)

The opening duo of Manzoor and Shehzad have given Pakistan a good start which has left Angelo Mathews scratching his head at the start of the visitor’s innings. The Sri Lankan skipper has tried the combination of pace and spin by employing Rangana Herath in the fifth over aside from Chanaka Welegedera and Dhammika Prasad.

Pakistan: 0/0 I Overs 0.0

Khurram Manzoor 0(0), Ahmed Shehzad 0(0)

The Pakistani openers walk down from the pavilion as do the Sri Lankans. Mahela Jayawardene gets a wonderful guard-of-honour while walking down the ground. Emotions among the hosts and we should look forward to what Pakistan has in store for us.

Sri Lanka: 320 I Overs 99.3

Chanaka Welegedera 27(30)

OUT! R Herath c Younis b Rehman 17 (27)

Younis joins takes his 100th Test catch from 91 Tests and becomes the only Pakistani to do so. An wonderful partnership and innings to end with Rangana Herath edging it to the slips while looking to defend it outside off. End of the Sri Lankan innings. Khurram Manzoor and Ahmed Shehzad, the Pakistani openers, will come down to bat shortly.

Sri Lanka: 314/9 I Overs 98

R Herath 13(24), Chanaka Welegedera 25(24)

Tensions growing between the sides with an exchange of words occuring between Junaid and Herath in the 97th over. Interesting contest going on at the SSC, with Welegedera playing swinging his bat at almost everything against the seamers, including two off the 98th over bowled by Riaz. Welegedera now races past Herath’s score in a matter of no time.

Sri Lanka: 284/9 I Overs 92.5

R Herath 7(16), Chanaka Welegedera 0(0)

OUT! Dhammika Prasad lbw Junaid 13 (34)

Dhammika Prasad was caught on the backfoot and the umpire took a close call. Junaid finally reaches the five-wicket mark and gets an important breakthrough. This is Junaid’s fifth five-wicket haul in an innings, all of them coming against the same opposition.

Sri Lanka: 281/8 I Overs 91

R Herath 6(15), D Prasad 12(25)

The Lankan tail-enders are frustrating the Pakistan pacers. They’ve added 20 runs in six overs this morning. It does show that this pitch is still good for batting and the Lankans threw their wickets away last evening. Pakistan pacers have tested Herath and Prasad with short balls to unsettle them but they’ve done well so far.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live blog of Day Two the second Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. I am Amit Banerjee and i will be bringing the live updates from the match. Pakistan pacers did a good job of restricting the Lankans after they got off to a solid start. Openers Kaushal Silva and Upul Tharanga shared a 79-run opening stand but the pacers bagged six wickets in the last session to wrestle control at stumps on Day One. The Lankans didn’t get to watch a long run from their hero Mahela Jayawardene, playing his final Test. Jaaywardene was dismissed by Saeed Ajmal for four.

Crucial day for Lanka as they are already down on a docile pitch. The team batting first have scored over 400 on an average and Lankan tail-enders will have to contribute well to take the team to a safe position.
