Stats Preview: India vs Netherlands

By Dileep V

India and Netherlands have met only once in ODI, in the group stages of the 2003 World Cup. India won the match, but truth to be told it was laborious and the team took a lot of flak for the way in which they approached the game. This time around with the matches happening on home soil, nothing less than a overwhelming win against the Dutch will do for the win hungry fan

Ryan ten Doeschate has fared well both with bat and ball

India travel from cool Bengaluru down south to up North, Delhi. This time they are up against the Netherlands. A win for India will virtually book them a place in quarter-finals.

India have generally done well against the Associate teams winning 20 of the 22 games played against them – the two losses coming against Kenya.

Sachin Tendulkar has piled up over a 1,000 runs against the Associate teams, the only batsmen to cross this mark. He also has five hundreds to his name, and would like to add one more tomorrow.

The Indian bowlers will welcome the change to bowl against the Dutch and try to correct their deficiencies. Like their batting counterparts even the bowlers have enjoyed their stint on the field against the Associate teams.

Ryan ten Doeschate and Bas Zuiderent are the only Dutch players to have more than 1,000 ODI runs to their credit. ten Doeschate has an impressive record averaging 65.28 with a strike rate of 88.45, add four centuries and you have a pocket dynamite. But against Test playing nations, his average comes down to 39. He gave England a scare in the Orange City and Indians will be wary of him.

ten Doeschate is a star in the bowling department as well, snaring 54 wickets overall and nine wickets against the Test-playing nation.

Netherlands have a solitary win against a Test playing nation and that too against Bangladesh last year. It’s hard to look beyond India for victors. Until and unless somebody comes up with a special knock or spell, the Dutch look like they will be steamrolled over by the Indians.
