Former captain Michael Clarke is positive that the trio of Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will start scoring runs upon their return to Australia squad.

The trio was banned last year for their role in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal. Bancroft’s nine-month ban ended last year in December and he turned out in the Big Bash League.

The duo of Smith and Warner will be eligible to play for Australia from March 29, the date when their 12-month long ban finally comes to an end. Their absence from international cricket has coincided with a dip in form of the national team which also resulted in suggestions of their ban being lifted prior to the original expiry date.

Several experts have pointed out their importance, especially that of Smith and Warner, to Australia’s return to dominance and also that they are the current defending ICC World Cup champions which is just a few months away.

“… for Australian cricket there’s absolutely no doubt we need them back,” Clarke told Fox Sports News. “They deserve to come back because they’ve done their crime, they’ve suffered their time. They’ll scores runs, there is no doubt about (it). They’ll walk back into that team and perform straight away.”

But Clarke, who was the captain when Australia lifted a record-extending fifth World Cup title in 2015, has warned against putting too much pressure on the premier batsmen saying two players won’t make them world-beaters again.

“We’re putting a lot of expectations and a lot of pressure on Steve Smith and David Warner to come back (and) all of our problems will be fixed when they come back. The reality is we have got to No.5 in the world with Smith and Warner in the team. Sports teams are a lot bigger than one or two players,” he said.

Clarke, who played 115 Tests, 245 ODIs and 24 T20Is, also said it would be important to observe the relationship between the trio. “It’s going to be really interesting to see how the three of them go when they are back in the same team together. How is the relationship between Warner and Smith or Bancroft and Warne?” he said.
