Steven Smith has learnt to be prolific. If Adam Voges rallied with the lower order to lift Australia to a winnable total in Dominica, Smith took his cue to do it here. Through much of the first day and now in the second, he has been immovable. He has punished the bad deliveries, made decisive use of his footwork, and rotated the strike to ensure the scoreboard kept moving and tailenders gain confidence. He has now scored more than 2000 runs (2113) in the last two years, the only batsman in the world to do so. LIVE SCORECARD: West Indies vs Australia, 2nd Test, Kingston, 2nd Day

It took a quality delivery to defeat him. After scoring 199, he faced a yorker that he could negotiate only with his legs, and the ball hit him on the boot, adjacent to the stumps. Australia were bowled out soon after, for 399. It talks much about his contribution that with an extra run he would have scored half his side’s total.

He has yet to score a double century, but if he keeps batting like this, he may soon reach that landmark.
