It was even-steven on Day Four of the second Test in the 2017-18 Ashes. Conceding a lead over 200, England bowled with purpose to bundle out Australia for 138. Chasing 354, England had a realistic chance of leveling the series, resuming final day’s play at 176 for 4. Nonetheless, apart from Joe Root‘s fifty, there was no contribution whatsoever from the lower order. Australia won by 120 runs, taking a 2-0 lead. With hosts only a win away from regaining the urn, there were quite a few reactions from former cricketers on Twitter.

With the third Test to commence from December 14, all eyes will be on Ben Stokes’ participation. The English all-rounder is currently undergoing match practice, playing for Canterbury in New Zealand. The decision on his participation is yet to be made. Clearly, England are struggling to pile on runs. His priceless addition will bolster them. Apart from this, the big guns such as Alastair Cook, Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow and Root have to stay in the middle for longer periods.
