Cricket Australia (CA) threw in a couple of surprises while naming their squad for the first two Tests against England in upcoming The Ashes 2017-18. Australia take on arch-rivals England at Gabbe, Brisbane on 23 November. In a first,Cameron Bancroft and Chadd Sayers have been named in the squad instead of Matthew Renshaw and Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Selectors have also recalled Tim Paine, who last played a Test against India in 2010. He was preferred ahead of Matthew Wade, Peter Nevill and Alex Carey. Paine’s Test average is 35 as compared to his First-Class average of 29.

Speaking on Paine’s selection, Trevor Hohns said : “Tim was identified as an international player a long time ago and has always been renowned as a very good gloveman, also performing well for us whenever he has represented Australia in any format.”

On Cameron Bancroft:

Cameron (Bancroft) has been a player of interest to us for some time now, having been unlucky to miss out on the Test tour to Bangladesh that was cancelled in 2015,” he added. “Shaun (Marsh) is playing very well at the moment, having scored consistently in the JLT One-Day Cup and first three rounds of the JLT Sheffield Shield competition.”

Steven Smith continues to lead the side, with David Warner acting as vice-captain. Usman Khawaja retains his side despite Glenn Maxwell’s contention. Their fast bowling will be led by Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Jackson Bird and Pat Cummins.

Nathan Lyon is the lone spinner in the side.
