England, being 2-0 down in the series, fought well on the first day of third Ashes Test. It was similar to that of the first day of the opening Test: England dominated Australia despite the early jitters.

Alastair Cook, playing his 150th Test, got out cheaply for 7. Mark Stoneman then scored a half-century; he was dismissed to a controversial decision by the third umpire. Joe Root got out on 20, edging one down leg. Dawid Malan scored the first hundred for England in the 2017-18 Ashes, his maiden as well. Jonny Bairtstow, playing on 75, built a good partnership of 174 runs with Malan, also completing his 3,000 runs in Tests.

Bairstow would like to convert his good start into a hundred. Australian pacers will bowl fiercely at the start of the day. If Malan and Bairstow post a good total, we may see attacking batting from Moeen Ali. England, at 305 for 4, have won the Day One.
