Fast bowler Jake Ball, too, has been doubtful after he suffered an ankle injury during the warm-up tie against Cricket Australia XI. However, he is likely to miss the final warm-up tie in Townsville on Wednesday. Nevertheless, despite his uncertainty, England coach Trevor Bayliss said that the pacer will be timely fit to play the opening Test. Bayliss believes the injury is not serious. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Australia vs England, Ashes 2017-18, 1st Test at Brisbane

On Ball's chances to play the first Test

"There could be a possibility he would be right for the next game but we will probably let him go there and make sure he is right for selection for the first Test. At least he will be available for the first Test. Whether we pick him or not, we have got to make that decision once we get closer. He should be right in that 7-10 day time frame, he's fairly confident," said Bayliss, as reported by AFP.

On England's victory in the previous warm-up tie

"I thought we got our lengths a lot better in this game. In Perth [against a Western Australian XI] we bowled a lot of half volleys and a lot of long hops. In this match we got the length a lot better and put pressure on the opposition. We will certainly have to do that during the Test series."

On Craig Overton

"It's the first time I have seen him up close over a number of overs. He is not necessarily quick but he bowls a heavy ball and good lengths. He is consistent with that length, which you need at the top level."

On Alastair Cook

"I'm sure he would have preferred to have scored a few, but a guy with that experience has been through periods [like that] before."
