It is not very often that a number eight batsman scores hundred in a Test and Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja missed that rare opportunity on Monday. During the third day’s play of third India and England Test at Mohali, Jadeja went on to play a special knock from his bat but fell 10-short of his maiden Test hundred. Well, despite missing his maiden ton, Jadeja continued his affair with the English team, which had started with his debut in 2012. In the Nagpur Test that year, Jadeja picked three wickets and twice he dismissed Kevin Pietersen. His love affair with England resumed in England in 2014 and now again in the ongoing series.

For the first time, Jadeja faced more than 100 balls in an innings in Tests. Even in ODIs, he has faced more than 100 balls only once in his career so far. Be it any player, missing maiden ton after entering the 90s is a huge disappointment. But Jadeja seems to be different from others as this is what he said during the post-match presser, “I am not disappointed that I was out to that shot. The shot, I got out to, is my pet shot. I can hit a six anytime with that shot, I had confidence, but the ball came slow off the wicket and that s why I didn t get the required impact.”

Talking about his aggression post lunch, he said, “I didn t go on an attacking mode. They were bowling boring lines outside off-stump. We had lot of time at our disposal so I just thought that lets disturb the bowler, going outside the off-stump and try to use the gaps on leg-side as there were only two fielders that side. That s what I was trying and luckily I got four boundaries in that over (from Chris Woakes).”

In recent times, plenty of questions have been raised over Jadeja’s batting in Tests and reacting to that, he added, “Its not that I consider myself as a batsman. I am a batsman. I have scored runs. If you leave out Test cricket, my average in First-Class cricket is 53. I have an idea that I can bat. I wasn t in a hurry.”

When asked about the spin bowling, which is India’s biggest strength at home conditions, Jadeja reacted, “Hum jab England gaye the tab toh unke spinners bhi aise lag raha tha ki Muralitharan ball daal raha hain. (When we went to England, even their spinners looked like Muralitharan is bowling).”
