Travis Head hits a blistering double; remembers Phil Hughes

Travis Head hit one of the most hard hitting double hundred against the most potent bowling attack in Australian domestic cricket. Head who dedicated this double century to his friend and former team mate late Phillip Hughes. Head’s knock was nothing short of a fire work as he made a blistering 202 from 120 balls in his side’s remarkable six wicket victory on the opening day of the Matador BBQ’s One-Day Cup. After being in the reckoning for quite a while Head made quite a name after today’s knock. Head who hit a century after 41 matches for South Australia ranging from Sheffield matches to one-day cup before today he has made on 200 runs in all competition.

He surpassed Matthew Elliot’s 146 hit in 2007 as the highest one–day score in the state’s history. Head, 21 who was named the SA captain last year after Johan Botha was replaced , while Jamie Siddons was named the new coach as a former coach Darren Berry parted way off-season. But the death of teammate and friend Phillip Hughes is what devastated the team morally. Hughes had a lot of impact on the team. Head who still feels very emotional as the loss of his friend looked up to the heavens as warmly hugged his team mate on the other end Callum Ferguson.

“I guess there’s that emotion. I was looking up at Hughesy and I hadn’t got one since [he passed] so it was a pretty big moment.”I just wanted to start the tournament really well and hopefully he’s looking down. “I actually equaled his highest score in one-day cricket, but unfortunately he was not out so he’d be into me for that,”Head told cricket.com.au after play.  ALSO READ: Shaun Marsh, Cameron Bancroft vouching for places in Australian Test team

Hardly anyone gave a chance to Redbacks wining the game at Hurstville Oval with only two wins in two seasons and also their one-day history not up to the mark as they headed against the champions from Western Australia. Head’s decision to put WA into bat was question by many as Shaun Marsh and Cameron Bancroft made centuries putting the Warriors at a total score of 350-4. Head received quite a blow by the paceman Jason Behrendorff in the opening over itself but made quite a strong point by making a quick but composure double. Soon after the first two wickets came in form batsman Ferguson, who has scored three centuries in SACA Premier League.

Ferguson was praised by Head, quoting “He’s a class player. He’s been in great touch and it was great to see him get a hundred.He got himself in, he knocked the ones and then he used his feet late to pick the gaps and put on a show. Hopefully he can push for higher honours and get his name up there.”

The partnership of 278 was also the highest for SA in 50 over format, while making a case for themselves in the national team. Ricky Pointing and Darren Lehman also supported a cause for Head to be called in nation team in the coming summer. Commenting on the views of Pointing and Lehman, Head told “”Anyone would want to push with so many opportunities. Boof had some kind words for me, but it’s just about getting runs and that’s easier to say now that I’ve got 200.I’ve just got to go through my routine and keep trying to bat the way I’m batting. I was really clear in my plans today, which is key for me and hopefully it’s the start of a big summer,” Head said.
