India Under-19 skipper Unmukt Chand blamed the team’s poor batting performance for the loss against West Indies Under-19, in their opening ICC Under-19 World Cup match.

“Our batting didn’t really do well but credit to them – they tried their best. The wicket was supporting the bowlers and it was seaming. We tried to stay in there but weren’t able to put up a bigger score. But we have a lot of positives to take from this match,” Chand was quoted as saying by www.bcci.tv.

Chand claimed that he tried to keep his wicket even though the track was wide open.

Chand suggested, “I was trying to stay there (at the crease) because the wicket was seaming a bit. It usually doesn’t happen but the cracks were wide open. That’s why the ball was pitching on them and doing the work. I was trying to stay there for as long as I could. All of us were trying to do the same the thing but couldn’t succeed. We will do better in the matches to come.”

On being asked whether the team needed another seamer, Chand said, “The two spinners have done a really good job. They have done really well in the practice matches as well. We are sticking with the spinners because the wicket also cracked but eventually it didn’t play that well. If we had scored around 200 (runs) it would have definitely helped us but all credit to our bowlers and our fielders for restricting them till the 47th over. It is a great job and I guess we have positives to take on to the next match.”

“The next match is on Tuesday. We will probably go out there and try to mend our ways. We have a meeting after this and (we will) work it out and go into the next match with a positive (mindset),” Chand concluded.
