Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history on Tuesday by becoming the youngest player ever to score a century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The 14-year-old left-handed batter from Samastipur opened the innings for Bihar against Maharashtra at Eden Gardens and reached his hundred in just 58 balls. His knock included 7 fours and 7 sixes.
Before him, Vijay Zol held the record, scoring a century at the age of 18 years and 118 days for Maharashtra against Mumbai in 2013.
Vaibhav, aged 14 years and 250 days, reached his century by smashing a six off the first ball of the 20th over bowled by Arshin Kulkarni. He remained unbeaten on 108 runs off 60 balls, helping Bihar post 176/3.
The young talent, who is also part of the India U19 squad for the upcoming U19 Asia Cup in Dubai, shared a crucial 75-run partnership with Ayush Loharuka (25* off 17 balls) for the fourth wicket.
For Maharashtra, Arshin Kulkarni, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, and Vicky Ostwal took one wicket each.
This century was a big comeback for Vaibhav, who had struggled in his first three matches of the tournament. He scored 14 against Chandigarh, 13 against Madhya Pradesh, and 5 against Jammu & Kashmir.
