Ahead of the third season of Women s Big Bash League (WBBL), Hobart Hurricanes have signed India s Veda Krishnamurthy, who will be the franchise s third overseas player, after England’s Lauren Winfield and West Indies’ Hayley Mathews.

Veda will be available to play in WBBL till January 15, 2018, before returning to India for national duties. WBBL 2017-18 will see two Indian women player participate: Veda and Harmanpreet Kaur

Harmanpreet will continue her stay with Sydney Thunders. According to a report published in ESPNcricinfo, all-rounder Deepti Sharma too is in line for a contract for the upcoming season.

Speaking on the same, Veda said, “The offer came about a month ago. I was pleasantly surprised because I wasn’t expecting it. Because our South Africa tour dates weren’t announced then. We were expecting it [the tour] to be in January, so there was some confusion if I’d be able to take up the offer.

“I spoke to Harman and Smriti about what to expect. It’s exciting to play in a brand new country, interact with new cultures. I think this is a direct result of ICC promoting the game well. With the World Cup being so well received, new avenues have opened up for cricketers from around the world. This deal is a direct recognition of India’s performance at the World Cup. To play in that environment with some of the world’s best will surely add a new dimension to my game, Veda concluded.

Smriti Mandhana, who played for Brisbane Heat last year, is likely to miss out, as the franchise is yet to offer her a renewal. Veda meanwhile will be available to play 10 games in WBBL. She will travel back to India to prepare for Eves tour to South Africa in February.

This means Veda will miss the final stages of the tournament if Hurricanes reach that far. The 2017-18 edition of WBBL commences on December 9.
