Abu Dhabi Knight Riders held their nerves to clinch a four-wicket victory over the Gulf Giants, moving into the top-four of the DP World ILT20 Season 4 standings. The win came on the back of a strong batting performance by the top order and a match-winning spell from veteran spinner Piyush Chawla.

Hales & Salt partnership sets the tone

Chasing a target of 166, the Knight Riders were given a solid start by their openers Alex Hales and Phil Salt. Hales played a patient knock of 46 off 39 balls, while Salt added a quick 35 from 24 deliveries. The duo stitched together a 61-run partnership off just 44 balls, setting the tone for a successful chase. Their steady start ensured that the Knight Riders stayed in control despite the pressure of a competitive target.

The lower order contributed crucial runs, with Sherfane Rutherford smashing 30 off 22 balls and Andre Russell finishing unbeaten on 21 off 13, guiding the team to victory with four balls to spare. Their late surge effectively nullified the efforts of the Gulf Giants’ bowlers, including leg-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, who had earlier taken 3 wickets for 23 runs.

Piyush Chawla’s Match-Winning Spell

With the ball, Piyush Chawla delivered a match-defining performance. The experienced leg-spinner claimed 4 wickets for just 27 runs, ensuring that Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 72 off 45 balls, including four fours and five sixes, did not take the game away from the Knight Riders. Chawla’s variations and ability to outfox the batters proved decisive in restricting the Giants to a challenging but chaseable total.

Player of the Match: Chawla reflects on his journey

Speaking after being named player-of-the-match, Chawla said, “When I started out, I never imagined cricket would become my profession – I played purely for the joy of it, and that passion is still there. The googly has always come naturally to me, so right now I’m spending more time working on my leg-breaks, experimenting with angles and a slightly more side-on action to get extra turn and put doubt in the batter’s mind.”

The victory was a crucial one for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, who now have momentum on their side as they aim to finish the league stage strongly. The combination of a solid top-order performance, contributions from the lower order, and an inspired bowling effort from Chawla helped the team register a well-earned win in a high-pressure encounter.
