Video: Clive Lloyd’s hundred that won West Indies the inaugural World Cup in 1975

There wasn’t much to choose between the sides when the inaugural World Cup final was played on June 21, 1975. Australia and West Indies were two of the strongest sides in the competition and the final was a fitting one. It was only something special that could help West Indies conquer the spirited men from Down Under and that was what captain Clive Lloyd provided. It was a sheer display of a brutal counter-attack. From 50 for three, West Indies finished at 291 for eight in their stipulated 60 overs. Lloyd completed his hundred from 82 balls — something incredible in the 70s.

Lloyd went on to score 102 from 85 balls against a bowling attack that comprised of Dennis Lille, Gary Gilmour and Jeff Thomson. The knock, which contained 12 fours and two sixes, was a great mix of classical batting and yet power-hitting.

West Indies went on to win the final by 17 runs, clinching the inaugural World Cup.
