Sri Lanka reeling at eight for one chasing 413 against India at Colombo, the one man who was the nation’s best shot at breaching the target, was walking out for the very last time for his country. The guard of honour as expected was there with young cricketers holding the bat up in salute for Kumar Sangakkara’s greatness. He was doing his customary routine, when for a moment when he was flexing his muscles; it seemed his bat might collide with a youngsters bat.

Sangakkara’s wife Yehali Sangakkara, was up on her feet, clapping for her dear husband. It was now the turn of the Indian team to do the guard of honour and Virat’s boys did it to perfection. Sangakkara seemed to be in his elements, not perturbed by the occasion knowing of the tall task at hand.

But sorrily, if one may say it was not the kind of a fairytale ending he would have hoped for. He was dismissed early off a quality off spinners delivery by Ravichandran Ashwin caught in the slips. Sangakkara was hand-shaked by the Indian cricketers in a gesture of respect.
