Former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar on Friday praised young middle-order batsman Virat Kohli after he hit his maiden Test century in the fourth and final Test match against Australia at the Adelaide Oval.

“I saw him first during the Emerging Trophy tournament first. His form in 2008 had been exciting,” Vengsarkar said.

“He was fortunate that the other selectors and team management agreed with me. I had picked him ahead of S Badrinath because he was a better ODI prospect. The others on the selection committee hadn’t seen him,” the former India cricketer was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Vengsarkar praised the Delhi lad saying that Kohli has made a statement with this knock that he belongs to the conventional format of the game.

“This was an ideal knock. He is mentally strong and he has made a statement that he belongs at the highest level,” Vengsarkar said.
