Dec 28, 2014 On his way to a career best score of 169, which helped India fight back in the third Test at Melbourne, Virat Kohli not only went past 1000 runs against Australia, but did so in the same fixture that Former India legend Sachin Tendulkar achieved this feat. Kohli, who reached his ninth century ensured that his 262-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane put the match on even terms. Sachin Tendulkar achieved this in the Boxing Day Test against Australia in the year 1999. Tendulkar has played 200 Tests for India and has made 51 centuries, with a highest score of 248 not out. Kohli becomes the only batsman after Sunil Gavaskar to score three centuries in a series against Australia. Kohli's 169 is also the highest score by a visiting batsman since Virender Sehwag's 195 in 2003. Kohli now has four centuries in Australia. India ended Day three of the Melbourne Test at 462 for eight, trailing Australia by another 68 runs. Kohli got to his century of 168 balls, with the help of 11 boundaries. His partner Ajinkya Rahane made a brilliant 147 at a relatively quick pace, which has helped India to stay alive in the match. Kohli had made twin centuries on captaincy debut at Adelaide, which India lost by 48 runs. Kohli did not contribute heavily in the second Test at Brisbane in which he relinquished his captaincy to MS Dhoni after the latter returned to lead the side after recovering from injury. Kohli had a couple of luck breaks. He was dropped when he was on 88 in the slip cordon, which cost Australia plenty eventually.
