India skipper Virat Kohli broke several records during his gritty 153 versus South Africa at Centurion. Day Three of the ongoing Test commenced with the batsman slamming his 21st hundred (second in South Africa). He batted alongside the tail, and equalled Don Bradman before falling short of Sachin Tendulkar — obviously according to another parameter.

Kohli joins Bradman in elite list

Kohli joined Bradman (8) with most scores in excess of 150 as captain. Bradman’s highest score as leader was 270, versus England at Melbourne MCG in 1936-37 — the top-ranked innings as per Wisden in 2001. On the other hand, Kohli’s 243 versus Sri Lanka remains his highest as captain.

Kohli falls short of Sachin

Kohli, on the other hand, fell short of Tendulkar. Tendulkar has the top (two) highest scores by an Indian in South Africa. His 169 and 155 (Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively) still rule the list with Kohli falling short by some distance. Kohli’s 153 is now joint-third highest by an Indian.

South Africa is a tough place for batsmen. Among the top 50 highest individual scores there, Tendulkar is the only Indian. Kohli’s 153 takes the 65th position overall. Interestingly, both Kohli and Pujara’s highest scores in South Africa are 153.
