As the Day 2 started, it started with India resuming their innings with an overnight score of 317 for the loss of four wickets, with Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin batting at 151 and a single, respectively, at the crease. Both the batsmen eventually also brought up the 350 runs for India in the 100th over, that included just four extra from the English bowlers. However, it was at the score of 351, when the skipper Kohli fell for 167, after being caught by Ben Stokes at the first slip off fast bowler James Anderson. It was bowled outside off, as Kohli looked to drive it through covers but was not to the pitch of the ball as he got an edge which flew quickly towards Ben Stokes at first slip going to his right, as he held it firmly. His innings included 18 boundaries, along with a strike rate of 63.

Just 12 runs later, it was followed by the wicket of wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, who fell for mere three to all-rounder -+Moeen Ali, who trapped him leg-before. It was a flighted one outside off, as it turned in sharply after landing, while Saha went onto his back foot to play but missed and got hit on the pads. There was a big appeal for a leg before but umpire Kumar Dharmasena was unmoved. England stopped appealing and start chasing the ball, while the batsmen looked for a run too. However, suddenly Dharmasena raised his finger after taking a long look. Saha was surprised as he went for a review, while the replays edit would have hit the stumps, as Saha continued his walk back to the pavilion. Just a couple of balls later in the same over, it was all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who fell for an unfortunate duck, after being trapped leg-before. It was a nicely tossed up delivery around the middle, as Jadeja played for the turn, while he tried to defend but missed the line. He gets hit on the pads and there’s a confident appeal for a leg before yet again. Dharmasena raises his finger rather quickly this time, while Jadeja had a chat with Ashwin and decided not to go for the review. However, the replays showed it the otherwise, as the ball was missing the leg-stump. Nevertheless, India had lost seven wickets by then.

Eventually, it was the pair of Ashwin, and Jayant Yadav, who batted through comfortably to take India past the 400-run mark by the 116th over, that included 10 extras from the English bowlers. The pair saw off the session, as the umpires called for the lunch break, while the pair also completed the 50-run stand for the eight wicket off 81 balls, with Ashwin contributing 23, and Yadav contributing 25, along with a couple of extras.

Brief scores:

India 415 for 7 (Cheteshwar Pujara 119, Virat Kohli 167; James Anderson 3 for 62, Moeen Ali 3 for 77) vs England.
